The RNC & Palin. WTF? [Sep. 6th, 2008|02:25 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood | aggravated]

It's not often that I post political commentary in this blog, but I'm pretty concerned right now. I can't believe the ridiculousness coming out of the RNC in the last week. Several journalist arrested including Amy Goodman of Democracy Now (not exactly your neighborhood anarchist public access news) but particularly concerning to me were the mass preemptive raids by police on several internet and indy journalist gatherings.

Sarah Palin. Are you SERIOUS?! The more I learn about her the less I find to like. She's totally experienced though! Yeah, right. Maybe in the Jimi Hendrix sense.

Here's a great, if scary, editorial letter from someone who has known her in Wasilla, AK That is pretty telling. I'll place my bets on "steps down for personal/family reasons" within the next 6-8 weeks (or once the media gets a hold of her, whichever is sooner ;) )

Greaser christ, superstar! [Jul. 7th, 2008|09:29 pm]

This is for the 2 or 3 people on my friends list that will appreciate this. In a moment of weakness, I decided that getting & watching (again) a copy of Greaser's Palace was a good idea (not to mention subjecting poor Dewberry as well). Yep, just as awful & incomprehensible as I remember it!

A few "Things I learned from this movie" from badmovie.org:
-When someone starts speaking in tongues it is because the Holy Ghost ground out a lit cigar on their chest.
-Jesus has a parachute license. (And knows how to make an entrance with ZAZZ!)
-Heaven is full of naked babies and rainbows.
-Christ can walk on water better than anyone else, but his floor routine needs work.
-Everybody appreciates a naked woman on horseback. (pretty much the only saving grace of this film, IMO)

Indiana Jones & the Icy Sidewalk of Doom [May. 23rd, 2008|06:23 pm]
Dear Spielberg & Lucas-

You've already ruined one perfectly good trilogy featuring Harrison Ford. Why exactly did you feel the need to fuck up a second? Wait, don't answer that. $Cha-ching$! Harrison, you should have given it up after Firewall (or maybe even sooner, but that was definitely the last straw). Action grandpa doesn't quite cut it.

That is all.

Just say no to Myth [May. 12th, 2008|02:29 pm]
DD & I went to see High On Fire, Megadeth with *yawn*,*zzzz* & *giggle snort* (3 currently popular with the kids, derivative, mind numbingly boring & retarded "metal" bands) at the Myth. The level of douchebaggery at the Myth is exceedingly high (both from the patrons & the staff). The security guards arbitrarily enforce overly specific rules with a fairly superior attitude. Allowing us in and then later telling us "You can't be here". On top of this, some jackass broke DD's glasses and then some other waste of space stole her VIP pass which was stuck to her pants. Great! The capper for the eve was that they would not let us backstage to meet Dave Mustaine (even though we had passes and had been backstage pretty much all night off and on). DD was so looking fwd to meeting her high school metal guitar hero. I enjoyed the two bands we came to see but on the whole, the level of bullshit we had to put up with definitely soured the eve for us.

I don't care what they book at the Myth. It's a horrible venue and I will not be going back, EVER! Not to mention that it's in bumfuck Maplewood!

New Slutmachine vs! Datura 1.0 on Darkwinter [Aug. 21st, 2007|12:26 am]

dw039 - Datura 1.0 vs! Slutmachine - Alien Cranial Vivisection

"Alien Cranial Vivisection" was recorded by Datura 1.0 and Slutmachine in the Summer of 1897 using equipment salvaged from crashed flying saucers, a carrot and some face-plate insertion technical manuals delivered to the side door by a blind Mexican Praying Mantis trainer. No flying squirrels were harmed in the making of this recording. Bicycle seats were painted with gold metal flake paint in the Olde Tyme Way, ground to a fragrant powder and then inserted backwards into a Flugelhorn while reciting the lyrics to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" into a temporal vortex manufacturing calibrator.Because "Rhinoceros eggs are as good as a Chimpanzee in a knife-fight". Datura 1.0 and Slutmachine endorse but do not use radio-active injection molded barn destroyer modules.

Holy !@#$ [Aug. 2nd, 2007|03:23 pm]
DD & I, not crushed. :) One of our friends on the way to band practice, actually SAW the 35W bridge collapse as he was about to travel across it. He is okay & lucky!

DD & I walked down there about 1 1/2 hrs. after it happened as it's not too far from the stead. We threaded our way through quite a bit of traffic & people going to see the bridge. Not dissimilar from going to the state fair. I almost expected to see concession stands!

I was utterly shocked at what I saw when we got there. It is an enormous structure, and to see a huge slab of concrete jutting into the air at a very wrong angle with twisted steel girders sticking out of it and then, it just stops. No highway, no bridge, nothing. The air was incredibly charged with emotion & shock from the large number of people who came to gawk. Oddly enough, nobody was talking or saying anything. Just looking on utterly speechless. Very intense and not an experience I will not soon forget. The ambience & the sounds in the air were pretty incredible as well. Sirens, helicopters, boats, the constant hum of machinery, trucks & emergency vehicles.

We viewed the bridge first from underneath on the university side (train cars were completely crushed beneath it), then across the university bridge, along the river down to the washington avenue bridge to the west bank. We were unable to go any further as the Washington avenue bridge was closed. We paused to have a beer & some dinner to try and absorb everything before making the hike back to the car.

DD & I were VERY impressed with the emergency response to this disaster. By the time we got there, all of the emergency & rescue people were already hard at work and had the entire area around the bridge (for at least a mile) cordoned off. Within 2 hours after it happened they had already rescued the majority of the people who were injured & put out all of the burning vehicles.

My thoughts go out to the people who didn't make it and to their families.

[EDIT]
These are some of the best photos of the bridge I have seen yet, from Noah, who lives (I'm guessing from what I know of the area) right off the University/35W south bound entrance ramp.

Minneapolis Underground [Jul. 19th, 2007|01:59 pm]
[mood |hung over]
[music |silence is golden. My ears are ringing today.]

The show last night was a blast! Thanks to all our peeps who came down to hang out and enjoy some really good music. Dolores' set was one of the best I've heard yet and I was grooving on a nice kymatic response from the music. Sexy stoner drone indeed. Nice contrast between the warm, gut massaging throb & the transgressive lyrics & vocals. DD's cover of Seedy Films by Soft Cell was fantastic too. And to think she considered not even doing it. I'm glad she did!

Thanks to Brooke for having us down & many thanks to Noise for bringing most of the DJ gear and the ass shaking tunes! I was only bummed that the night ended earlier & I didn't get to hear more Noise! Congrats to the Sinista Minister for winning the prize for his snizzy snazz outfit. Lookin' FAB!

Needless to say, I was a bit hung today. Totally worth it though.

The last two weeks have been kind of a blur. 5 days of camping at Lake Monson (about 2 hrs. west of the twin cities near wilmar). Beautiful place. DD & I spent the time hiking, canoeing (man was I sore the next day after that), starting excessively large campfires (I ended up buying a camp saw in town so we could cut up a couple trees to throw on the fire heh), making some pretty spectacular meals on the campfire (the thick cut smoked chops were the shit as far as I'm concerned. Like eating an inch thick slab of smoked bacon or ham mmmm), putting my knife to good use carving a fire staff from a nice piece of red oak with which to poke at said fire, and general slackery and hanging out VERY casual. Saw some really cool stuff. 1000's of dragon flies fighting & fucking over the lake, a flock of VERY large water birds taking off & flying right over us (white pelicans or herons maybe?), awesome lightning storm & beautiful sunsets over the lake (our campsite was right on the lake so made for a really nice view). Unfortunately, you can't get good beer in rural MN. Fortunately, we BYO.

The Blackbox migration continues and hopefully I can get down to the biznass of designing the new products for the new venture, Evol Audio.

Skinny Crappy [May. 7th, 2007|02:39 am]
So let me preface this by saying that I am a long time (read old skool) Skinny Puppy fan. I grew up listening to the early S.P. releases which is probably why the new stuff doesn't have much appeal.

After Greater Wrong, my expectations for the new record (Mythmaker) were pretty low. It doesn't even meet those decidedly low expectations. Could they possibly make a more gimmicky and pussified album? Doubtful. Hey Kevin, we need more robot voices on this! Lets throw a couple of ballads in there for good measure. Gaaaaah.

On a much brighter note, the new Throbbing Gristle record (The Endless Not) is great! Definitely TG, but a very mature and well produced record. Original members, but not all original equipment. Heh. Save your money on the SP and buy this instead. ;)

Dirty Detroit [Nov. 6th, 2006|12:23 am]

The fromthegut halloween show in Detroit was a blast! 2 days of some pretty awesome music. The diversity of the music I saw on Fri. & Sat. nights (not including our tourist trip to the goth club baha) was pretty impressive. Met a lot of cool people and had a great time. Here's some photos from the show:

Halloween Dance Party - 10/28 - Detroit [Oct. 24th, 2006|08:35 pm]

Seriously diverse lineup. Pretty much guaranteed to be sheer insanity.

I'm going as the Doombringer. And yes, I'll be bringing the doom! I put together about an hour of black ambience for my costume (with it's own portable sound system to have my own cloud of evil following me around). I'm also doing a brand new set using a (dusted off) roland drum pad along with the x-session controller & lock groove records so I can REALLY fuck some shit up! Dusting off the drum pad has also been a boon to my drum programming because invariably, it's easier just to play what's in my head rather than try to translate it into a button grid.

It's definitely been a struggle to find a middle ground between performing completely live (not really possible w/ the music I make w/o some sort of super computer and about 10 people) vs. DJ'ing a set (sorry but this is lame) without causing the laptop to give up or start on fire heh. This seems like a good compromise. Plus...you know...wailing on stuff. You can never go wrong there! Ableton Live never ceases to impress me with it's flexibility.
